How the Shanghai 3A international departments work
A plain-language explainer on China's Class-3A hospital tier and the international patient departments that coordinate spine surgery, cancer screening, and complex care for overseas patients.
"Class-3A" (三级甲等, often written 3A or 三甲) is the highest grade in China's national hospital-rating system, awarded to large tertiary hospitals that meet the top standards for facilities, staffing, and research. Shanghai concentrates several of them, and many run dedicated international or VIP patient departments set up to receive overseas patients — with English-capable coordination, streamlined appointments, and help navigating admission.
These international departments are where an administrative coordinator such as MediBridge interfaces with the hospital on a patient's behalf. Our role is logistical and clerical: presenting the records you hold for the hospital physician's independent review, scheduling the appointments the hospital offers, arranging interpretation, and coordinating payment directly with the hospital. Every clinical judgement — whether about spine surgery, an early cancer screening panel, or any other care — is made by the hospital's own licensed physicians, never by us.
For an overseas patient, the practical benefit of going through an international department is that a lot of the friction is handled up front: the department is used to foreign records, foreign passports, and patients who are only in the city for a short window. A coordinator adds a translation layer and takes the scheduling, travel, and paperwork off the patient's plate so the visit fits a tight trip.
